Botox® for TMJ, Jaw Pain & Neck Tension
Targeted, gentle treatment for tight jaws, sore muscles,
and overworked joints.

If you wake up with a tight jaw, headaches, or soreness in your face and neck, you may be dealing with TMJ issues, clenching, or grinding - even if you don’t notice it during the day.
At Signature Dentistry, Dr. Sommers uses therapeutic Botox® to relax overactive muscles in the jaw, temples, and neck, reducing tension and protecting your teeth and joints.
Instead of just masking symptoms, Botox targets the specific muscles that are doing too much work - especially around the:
-
Jaw joints (TMJ area)
-
Masseter muscles along the jawline
-
Temporal muscles at the sides of the head
-
Key “trigger points” in the neck and shoulders that contribute to jaw strain
By softening the intensity of these muscles, many patients experience:
-
Less jaw pain and tightness
-
Fewer tension-type headaches
-
Reduced clenching and grinding forces
-
Less wear and damage to teeth and restorations
-
A more relaxed, natural jaw position

How Treatment Works
Evaluation
Dr. Sommers will examine your bite, TMJ, and muscle patterns and may also discuss nightguard or NTI options if needed for protection while you sleep.
Precise Injections
Small amounts of Botox are placed into carefully selected muscles in the jaw, face, and/or neck. Most patients describe the sensation as a quick pinch.
Gradual Relief
Over the next 3–7 days, muscles begin to relax. Many patients feel their jaw “unclench” and notice less tension and fewer headaches.
Maintenance
Results typically last about 3–4 months. Follow-up visits are scheduled based on your symptoms and goals.

Is Therapeutic Botox Right for You?
Botox for TMJ and muscle tension may be a good fit if you:
-
Clench or grind your teeth (especially at night)
-
Have frequent jaw fatigue or soreness
-
Notice tightness in your neck or shoulders related to jaw tension
-
Have worn, cracked, or sensitive teeth from grinding
-
Already use a nightguard but still feel tension or pain
In many cases, Botox works alongside other TMJ treatments such as custom nightguards, NTI appliances, or bite adjustments - for the best long-term results.
As always, Dr. Sommers will review your health history, medications, and treatment options to make sure Botox is safe and appropriate for you before moving forward.
