A Conservative Way to Improve
White Spots on Teeth

Not all white spots need drilling or more aggressive treatment.

Resin infiltration is a minimally invasive option that can improve the appearance of certain white spot lesions while helping protect weakened enamel.

For many patients, it is a comfortable, single-visit treatment that blends the treated area more naturally with the surrounding tooth.

What Are White Spot Lesions?

White spot lesions are areas of enamel that have lost minerals. They often look chalky, opaque, or brighter than the surrounding tooth.

These spots are commonly seen:

  • after braces or orthodontic treatment

  • in areas where plaque collected around brackets

  • with mild fluorosis

  • in teeth with certain enamel development defects

White spots are often an early sign that the enamel surface has been weakened, even before a true cavity forms.

What Is Resin Infiltration?

Resin infiltration is a micro-invasive treatment designed for certain non-cavitated enamel lesions.

A very low-viscosity resin is placed into the porous enamel, where it penetrates the lesion and is hardened with a curing light.

This can help the white spot blend more naturally with the tooth while reinforcing the affected enamel. One commonly used system for this treatment is Icon

Why Patients
Like It

No drilling
In appropriate cases, resin infiltration is completed without removing healthy tooth structure.

No shots or anesthesia in most cases
Because the procedure is conservative, anesthetic is typically not required.

Improves appearance quickly
Many patients notice an immediate cosmetic improvement after treatment.

Helps preserve enamel
By penetrating and sealing the porous enamel, resin infiltration can help stabilize early, non-cavitated lesions.

Benefits of Early Treatment

Treating white spots early may:

  • improve the look of the tooth

  • help preserve natural enamel

  • reduce the chance that an early lesion progresses

  • avoid the need for more invasive treatment later in some cases

For many patients, this makes resin infiltration an appealing option between “do nothing” and traditional restorative treatment.
